Sunday Skating with Dad

Like many parents, Sunday was Jim’s last day of holidays, so he took the boys skating in the morning. The boys are in fact signed up for skating lessons Sunday mornings, and everything was all set to start, except the folks running the program forgot to tell the skating coach that the first lesson was to be on the 3rd—he was still away on vacation! It was sunny, just a bit below freezing, with no wind; in other words, perfect skating weather. We are so lucky to have some of the finest and best maintained ice in Calgary right in our community, about an 8 minute walk from home. There’s a full-size hockey rink (with boards, and yes, that’s our community’s own ZAMBONI you see driving by in some of the pics), as well as a large ‘pleasure skating rink’ beside it. The boys were out with Jim for almost 2 hours.

My three men. Gareth has kid skates that can expand to accommodate his feet over a few sizes.

Daegan waving goodbye to me before taking off to show me how fast he can skate now.

Daegan can really skate now; he’s no longer just ‘walking on ice’. And that’d be the zamboni on the rink in the background.

Daegan showing me how he can skate backwards a little now. I was impressed, and that’s a skill I still  haven’t mastered.

Gareth is still at the ‘walking on ice’ stage of things, but he had fun nonetheless. And he’s mastered the most important skill for beginners: Jim taught him how to get up from a fall, unassisted. A skill that came in handy:

Gareth wasn’t the only one spending time directly on the ice.

And after his experience last winter, Jim now wears wrist guards on the ice. And takes both calcium and Vit D supplements! :-)
