Nature Walk at the Park

The boys and I headed down to our local natural area / park during our recent spell of mild weather. At first, the boys played at the playground, but only after the noise from the passing train stopped:

Gareth none-to-happy about the noise levels---and neither was the wildlife!

Gareth loves to swing. The other Mom was kind enough to boost him in and push, giving my sore ankle a break.

After a few more minutes, we headed off on a nature walk. Various folks on the Alberta-Birds email list I am on have reported seeing a small flock of pine grosbeaks hanging around a particular area of the park. Unfortunately we didn’t see any grosbeaks (sigh), but we did see the first robin of the year! Woot! Spring is coming!:

Here’s the rest of the walk. Hover your mouse over the pics for details:

brothers, walking through the 'forest'

red-breasted nuthatch, one of the few birds that walk 'down' trees

squirrel

Gareth found a feather

black-capped chickadee

what caused this tree to perish? beavers? natural causes? humans? The boys check it out.

We’ve got to enjoy these days while we can in Alberta; the forecast is for more snow next week.
