Pascal’s Triangle 2: Evens and Odds

March 19th, 2010Posted by Risa Kawchuk

I left you to figure out why the even/odd (multiples of 2) triangle showed upside-down triangle patterns (when coloured) in a previous post: Here’s what Daegan and I did to figure it out. We began by investigating what happens when you add two whole numbers. This means you are adding in one of four possible [...]

Daegan Homeschool Art Class, Winter 2010

March 18th, 2010Posted by Risa Kawchuk

Daegan had his last class from the winter session of Homeschool Art recently. He loved it so much he has asked to be signed up for spring session as well. We lucky enough to live within walking distance (literally a 30-second drive) of one to Calgary’s two Arts Centres, so I’ve obliged. Art was never [...]

Quote that Made Me Go “Hmmm…”

March 17th, 2010Posted by Risa Kawchuk

Just a quick post tonight, as the whole family has been down the last few days with a nasty stomach bug, and I’ve run out of saved posts to publish! Came across this interesting quote during the ample time I’ve had for lying in bed and reading over the past few days. It conveys much [...]

Amazing Octopus Camouflage

March 15th, 2010Posted by Risa Kawchuk

Have you seen this TED talk? There’s interesting bits throughout the 5 minute clip, but the end segment with the camouflaged octopus is simply incredible. I have never seen camouflage taken to this degree—it’s like something out of another world! Enjoy! (The amazing camouflaged octopus begins at about the 4:20 mark).

Pascal’s Triangle: Play with your math!

March 14th, 2010Posted by Risa Kawchuk

Now that he has addition under his belt, I introduced Daegan to Pascal’s Triangle, one of my favourite devices for playing with math. There are so many fun activities to do with this, so many patterns to find: symmetry, natural numbers, triangle numbers, the Fibonacci sequence, factors and multiples, binomial expansion, etc. We’ll be revisiting [...]

Morning Nature Walk with Daegan

March 13th, 2010Posted by Risa Kawchuk

Daegan and I headed out for a short morning nature walk before his drama class last Saturday. We saw more signs of spring, including magpies building a nest: Daegan found a patch of ice that reminded him of a map of Europe (France and Spain, UK up above across the ‘channel’): He learned a bit [...]

Science Fun with Ice Cubes and Salt

March 12th, 2010Posted by Risa Kawchuk

Jim did a couple of really simple science activities with the boys on the weekend, using just ice cubes, salt, and string. He emptied an ice cube tray into a large bowl, and then put one cube in each of the boys’ blue bowls, along with a piece of string, asking: “How can I use [...]

Children’s Literature: Then and Now

March 10th, 2010Posted by Risa Kawchuk

The boys and I recently read A Bear Called Paddington (a fuller review in my forthcoming Reading Round-Up), and I was struck by the complex sentence structure and vocabulary of this book published in 1958—it seemed so much richer than much of the literature for young children today. My impressions were no doubt heightened as [...]
