Easter Riddle Hunt
For Easter this year, the boys had a riddle egg hunt. The riddles led them from one egg to another around the house, and finally to the cache of Easter gifts. The riddles were prehistoric themed—the “Easter Bunny” (not me!) created them, which was so appreciated! Here’s the pics and riddles:
Inside the egg was this riddle:
I overheard a herd
Of pachyderms I’d say
On top of someone’s dresser
Looking for some hay.
Off to Mom and Dad’s bedroom, where I have some elephant figurines on our dresser.
Inside:
Volcanoes are quite hot
And made of lava rock
Careful not to burn yourself
When you look beside the clock.
We have a clock radio beside the fireplace in the basement. Charge!
Inside:
Once I met a dinosaur
I bet you can dig it
He knows where the next clue is
Better go ask Wiggit.
Wiggit is Gareth’s T rex puppet that sleeps with him every night, his favourite toy. To Gareth’s room!
Inside:
The ice age has come and gone
Except for in this place
It is awfully chilly
In this small and quite dark space.
Figured it out? This one took the boys a minute or two to get. Off to…
Inside:
Plesiosaurs swam
In waters very deep
Look inside this ocean
Beside where we all sleep.
This too took the boys a bit to solve. Oddly, though Daegan read all the clues aloud, it was Gareth who solved most of them first (and he’d go charging off before telling anyone which is why he keeps getting to the eggs before Daegs.)
Inside:
Archaeopteryx was our relative
But now is not his age
If you want your next clue
Come look beside our cage.
I didn’t get a pic of this one, an egg beside the budgies’ (parakeets’) cage. Inside that egg was this clue:
Strike is a three-horn
And his species lived north and south
If you want your next clue
Come check inside my mouth.
Strike is Daegan’s Triceratops puppet. If we ever have a fire, after ensuring people and animals are out, if it was safe, Strike and Wiggit would be rescued next. They’re THAT important in this family.
Inside:
The Cretaceous Period was quite hot
And quite windy too
You’d get very dry in here
While finding gifts for you.
Here’s where the cache of Easter gifts were found:
The boys each got a small solid chocolate bunny (dark chocolate, as they do not tolerate milk well), a book (Hocus Pocus Diplodocus: The Entire History of the Universe in 21 Poems by Tom Stainer. It’s long been out of print, but I knew I had to find it after reading the Darwin poem. More here.), and a CD/DVD combo (Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants (Canada) (US) ). Not your conventional Easter hunt or gifts, perhaps, but pretty much perfect for our boys. Hope your Easter was just as fun and special.

Thanks for the wonderful summary and photography. Great to see a fun moment captured. The boys sure did have a blast racing through the house finding clue eggs. I wonder if the Easter Bunny had any help writing all those riddles??? :^)
