Inglewood Bird Sanctuary with Daegan

While Jim stayed home with Gareth, who was struggling with a cold and another bad asthma attack, Daegan and I headed out for a nature walk as part of my Sabbath Manifesto. Amid sun, rain, and even hail, we had a great time on our 3-hour stroll around Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in the heart of Calgary. We saw more than a dozen different birds species, and two mammals. Daegan’s highlight was seeing a family of Canada Geese with newly hatched goslings. They were so adorable covered in yellow fuzz! Here’s the pics (hover your mouse over for details):

Life on the water:

Canada Geese with goslings.

Fuzzy goslings and parent. (The fifth gosling was fine, just straggling.)

wood duck (male)

muskrat and mallard (male)

Various gulls. Franklin's have a black head; juveniles have brown on the body.

common goldeneye (female)

hooded merganser (female)

common mergansers (male with white)

Life in the trees:

starling

red winged blackbird

northern flicker

American robin

downy woodpecker. It seemed to be going after bugs inside the gall.

magpie

black-capped chickadee (that later landed on Daegan's empty outstretched hand).

Life on the ground:

white-tailed deer, browsing white-tailed deer, ears perked, just before it took off with 2 others.

The other thing we saw lots of was nests, as our trees are just starting to leaf out. This was my favourite, and I did see a bird fly in and out (but too quickly to ID). I wonder what lives here?

And, of course, Daegan spent a lot of time near the ground, checking out bugs, scat (no owl pellets this time), and tracks.

I just love this time of year when everything is coming alive again. I only wish my younger child were well enough to enjoy it with us!
