Daegan’s Cartooning Class

Over the past few weeks, during spring, Daegan took a “Cartoons and Comics” class, which he said he enjoyed very much, despite GREAT frustration some days when we went to pick him up as something hadn’t turned out as he wanted: art can be a challenge for the perfectionistic! Still, it was a good learning experience in many ways, and with a superb teacher that Daegan has had before—for his very first art class, in fact, more than 2 years ago now. Here’s some of his work:

A surreal / black-humoured food fight, which began with a tomato, slice of pizza, can of gasoline (petrol) and a dog. I’ll let you use your own imagination as to what happens (hint: lots of explosions and free-floating body parts):

A panel in a similar vein, involving a karate-loving mango threatening to harm a tomato (“You’re ketchup!”), in a similar manner the peanut has been harmed becoming peanut butter. Kid humour at its finest:

Now for a few that make me wonder less about the need for psychological counselling. :-) Daegan is very proud of his dinosaur with moveable joints:

as well as his colourful clay figurine scene, complete with tree and lake. (On top of his folder for the class):

Hopefully we’ll be able to find him a claymation class in a few years; he’s already asking.

Billy did a claymation course through our local art gallery when he was about 6. He loved it! Since then though they’ve increased the minimum age so he can’t do it any more. I’m not sure if he was the reason or not :)
